Respiratory Nurse Specialist, Band 6 (37.5 hours a week)

The Respiratory Nurse Specialist will work as part of the Integrated Respiratory Team, supporting inpatient and outpatient respiratory services within the acute setting across Gloucestershire. The post holder will deliver specialist respiratory nursing care to patients with a range of acute and chronic respiratory conditions, in line with Trust policies and national guidance.

Would consider secondment or part time hours with a minimum of 30 hours

Main duties of the job

The role supports admission avoidance and early supported discharge through timely respiratory assessment, oxygen assessment and review, and follow-up via virtual ward and supported discharge pathways. The post holder will also contribute to the coordination of care delivered in the community, including intravenous therapies. These pathways support effective patient flow and contribute to the reduction of avoidable inpatient stays, with the bronchiectasis service supporting the release of over 600 acute bed days in 2025.

A key element of the role is proactive and reactive contact with outpatients, including telephone consultations, to provide clinical advice, assessment and follow‑up as part of admission avoidance pathways.

Job responsibilities
  • Act as an integral member of the respiratory multidisciplinary team, ensuring effective communication with medical, nursing, allied health and primary care colleagues, as well as patients and carers
  • Undertake respiratory nursing assessments within the acute setting, including oxygen assessment and review, structured respiratory reviews, audit activity, and identification of patients suitable for virtual ward, supported discharge or admission avoidance pathways
  • Provide clinical advice and support to outpatients, including remote and face‑to‑face assessment, in accordance with agreed pathways
  • Contribute to agreed areas of specialist respiratory practice, maintaining up‑to‑date clinical knowledge and supporting service development, including participation in nurse‑led clinics as required
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse or AHP
  • Degree Qualified or equivalent level of study or experience
  • Independent prescriber or willingness to undertake
  • Additional relevant qualification at diploma/degree ideally in respiratory
  • Teaching/Assessing Qualification
Experience
  • Extensive experience of working in the NHS in the community or hospital setting
  • Appropriate experience of working in a respiratory care environment
  • Experience of managing long term respiratory conditions such as COPD, asthma, ILD, Bronchiectasis
  • Experience of managing patients during an exacerbation of a long term respiratory condition
  • Experience of working in partnership with community services
