The department is scheduled to review a number of pieces of equipment in the coming year. We are UKAS & MHRA accredited. Haematology in Gloucestershire really is a stimulating place to work.

Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust provides a countywide Haematology and Transfusion services across two major sites at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. Both provide 24/7 service with specialisms rationalised across sites.

We are one of the largest hospital trusts in the country providing high quality acute elective and specialist care for a population of more than 850,000 people. This incorporates specialist services, including haematological malignancies, for neighbouring counties and we have facilities for autologous stem cell transplantation. We support Clinical Immunology with an Immunology Laboratory within the management structure of Haematology. Overall, the department processes approximately 78,000 requests and 1.5 million tests per annum.

duties of the job

Core hours , Early shift , Late shifts  & 13:30-21:30, Nights 19:15-07:00 & . Unsocial hours currently attract an RRP payment as well as A4C enhanced rates.

This position includes shift working.

Applicants must be HCPC registered and hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio.

Substantial qualified experience in Haematology & Blood Transfusion in an NHS laboratory setting.

To work within the Haematology department, rotating around Haematology, Blood Transfusion & Immunology. Full participation in a 24 hour shift pattern is expected to cover two hospital sites.

Job responsibilities

To assist in the provision of a comprehensive continuous 24 hour diagnostic service by performing a wide range of urgent, non-urgent and specialised procedures and investigations in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion specialties.

This includes the technical and clinical validation of own work and the communication of any confidential urgent/abnormal results thereby facilitating the appropriate diagnosis and effective treatment of patients. The post holder is also expected to select, ensure compatibility and issue blood products in a timely and efficient manner (sometimes in life saving situations e.g. trauma and major bleeding).

It is expected that the post holder will uphold both the IBMS and HCPC Code of Conduct and act as a role model to other staff whilst maintaining fitness to practice in accordance with the HCPC standards.
