OverviewAn established UK manufacturing business is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its operations team at its Cheltenham site. This role offers the opportunity to work end-to-end on both standard and bespoke engineered products, from initial concept through to manufacture, within a technically strong and supportive environment.
The RoleAs a Design Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting customer requirements and manufacturing operations by producing high-quality design and engineering documentation. You will work closely with production, sales, suppliers, and customers to ensure designs are safe, cost-effective, and fit for purpose.
Key responsibilities include :- Producing concept, preliminary, and detailed manufacturing drawings
- Creating material lists, BOMs, routings, and costing information
- Providing CNC programming data and supporting manufacturing processes
- Supporting prototype builds, testing, evaluation, and reporting
- Ensuring all designs comply with relevant quality, safety, and environmental standards (ISO 9001 & 14001)
- Liaising with manufacturing teams to support on-time delivery to customer specifications
- Working with suppliers and subcontractors to source materials and outsourced processes
- Supporting continuous improvement, cost reduction, and quality initiatives
- Providing technical support to sales, customer service, and after-sales activities
- Assisting with new product development projects
- Attending occasional customer visits and technical meetings
You will be a detail-focused engineer with strong design-for-manufacture experience and the confidence to work autonomously while collaborating across teams.
Essential requirements- Proven experience in a design engineering role
- Strong CAD skills (Solid Edge, AutoCAD, or similar)
- Practical understanding of manufacturing processes
- High attention to detail with a quality-driven mindset
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
- Commercial awareness and understanding of cost structures
- IT literate (Microsoft Office)
- Understanding of health & safety considerations in design
- Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Materials, or Production Engineering
- 32,000 - £38,000 salary, dependent on experience
