Overview

As a key member of the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, you will be joining an exceptional team working together to help our patients stay healthy, when they need it most. The NIHR fellowship aims to prepare the Fellow for Consultant practice as a General Ophthalmologist with a special interest in oculoplastic surgery.

Responsibilities

The postholder will:

  • Provide complete surgical training in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbit procedures, including orbital decompression surgery.
  • Be proficient in commonly performed oculoplastic procedures (eyelid tumour management and reconstruction, eyelid malposition procedures, ptosis, lacrimal drainage surgery, blepharoplasty).
  • Supervise operating theatre sessions and deliver six outpatient clinics each week, including primary care, with one dedicated teaching session.
  • Coordinate and deliver the acute Oculoplastic service under the guidance of the Consultant Ophthalmologist.
  • Act as a point of contact for junior medical staff requiring Oculoplastic support and undertake general ophthalmic outpatient duties as required.
  • Manage administrative tasks and patient-related correspondence, and contribute to clinical governance activities within the department.
Clinical Environment

Our Oculoplastic clinics run alongside a designated Consultant, providing support and supervision. The department currently has two Oculoplastic Consultants, offering wide exposure to clinical and surgical techniques.

Aims and Development

The NIHR Fellowship offers you complete surgical training in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbit disciplines. The post is allocated within Integrated Academic Training (IAT) partnerships, providing a 12-month fixed-term clinical and academic training environment for doctors in the early stages of specialty training.

Ambition and Culture

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, improve the health and well-being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers. We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation, we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to increased employment opportunities across our Trust.
