About The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Substance Misuse Recovery Worker to join our team at HMP Thorn Cross – a Category D open prison in Appleton Thorn, Warrington, housing around 430 males. This is a crucial role within the healthcare team, making a real difference to patients and delivering outstanding care.

Hours

Full time, 37.5 hours per week. Monday – Friday 8:00‑4:00 pm.

Salary

Annual salary between £29,264 – £33,510 per annum, depending on experience.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Being responsible for a caseload of patients (around 35–45), working closely with them to deliver support, one‑to‑one sessions, and advise on relapse prevention and triggers
  • Deliver group sessions across the substance misuse service, including SMART, patient forums and harm reduction activities
  • Plan for prisoner discharge / release and ensure ongoing care continues post‑release
  • Deliver outstanding psychosocial care, listening to and acting on patient feedback to ensure care is personalised and tailored to the individual
  • Provide a programme of psychosocial interventions
  • Provide information and advice on substance misuse, alcohol, smoking cessation, blood‑borne viruses and safe sex practices
What We'll Look For
  • Experience of working within substance misuse, whether in the community, hospital or a secure setting
  • Experience with in a multi‑disciplinary framework, including housing, social care, health care and mental health pathways (bonus)
  • Experience or knowledge of SMART; experience running group sessions and one‑to‑one sessions is helpful
  • Relevant qualification or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated compassion, drive and commitment to delivering high‑quality care in challenging environments
  • Legal right to work in the UK, and willingness to undergo additional vetting and security checks due to the nature of the role
