FLSA Status: This is a Non-Exempt position.

Department: Wastewater Maintenance Dept.

SUMMARY:

Incumbents in this classification are responsible for performing skilled-level plant maintenance activities related to monitoring the performance of mechanical systems to ensure proper operations. Demonstrates basic knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the area of assignment. Duties include receiving on-the-job training to perform routine inspections, installations, preventive maintenance, and testing and repair tasks. Works as part of a team with moderate supervision.

SERIES LEVEL:

The Industrial Mechanic 1 is the second level of a five-level wastewater plant maintenance series.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.)

  • Proficiently performs the duties and responsibilities typically assigned to an Industrial Mechanic Assistant.
  • Demonstrates efficiency and safety in the performance of job duties and usage of equipment.
  • Monitors mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning and to diagnose potential problems; troubleshoots and repairs machinery related to wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Diagnoses and repairs lift station pumps, motors, sump pumps, valves, and gate valves; performs minor fabrication of parts and pump pulling as required.
  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical machinery as master pump stations, including pumps, motors, gear reducers, valves, and rake bar systems.
  • Inspects and repairs digester building and related equipment, including positive displacement pumps, gas burners, automatic gas drain valves, boiler systems, and odor control systems.
  • Disassembles and rebuilds centrifuges, including removing and replacing bearings, seals, and ceramic wear rings; performs preventative maintenance on residential grinder pump stations.
  • Replaces rake bar systems.
  • Shuts down and performs major overhauls of oxygen generation plant equipment and machinery.
  • Inspects and repairs cell gates, cell blowers, hydraulic valves, and water lines.
  • Must meet regular attendance requirements.
  • Must be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers, and citizens.
  • Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • This position is deemed essential during inclement weather situations, and must report to or remain at work, even when administrative closings are announced, as determined by the Department Head.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School or GED and three (3) years of any combination or relevant education, experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Examples of experience include machinery and equipment maintenance in an industrial, wastewater, or water plant setting.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS:

A valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
Must be able to obtain a Forklift Certification.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of safe work practices; mechanical and electrical equipment principles; basic plumbing principles; maintenance requirements for plant mechanical and electrical systems; automated equipment operation and maintenance; welding principles and practices; applicable tools and equipment utilized in the trade; and, heavy equipment operation principles.

Skill in diagnosing and repairing mechanical plant systems, equipment, and machinery; implementing preventative maintenance on applicable systems, equipment, and machinery; utilizing tools and equipment of the trade; adhering to safe work practices; reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, plans, technical manuals, and specifications; operating…
