Overview

This position performs various assignments in service maintenance, installation, new machine start-ups and repairs on heavy equipment, usually at customers' locations. The ideal candidate is familiar with testing specifications, troubleshooting, reads/interprets blueprints and diagrams, and operates Astec equipment or equivalent. They adjust machine settings to complete tasks accurately and in a timely fashion. This role may also train customers' employees in proper operation and maintenance of equipment.

They may interact with engineers to resolve field problems and provide recommendations for equipment design or operation improvements.

Responsibilities
  • Provide service and customer support during visits and dispatches.
  • Manage all on-site installation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Diagnose errors or technical problems and determine proper solutions.
  • Produce timely and detailed service reports.
  • Understand customer requirements and provide appropriate recommendations/briefings.
  • Travel in service truck or company-provided vehicle to customer sites to maintain and/or repair Astec equipment in the field as scheduled or directed.
  • Perform emergency and scheduled repairs to Astec equipment as requested by customer, Service Manager, or other designated personnel.
  • Deliver and prepare machine documentation or field reports to aid in identifying root causes of service issues and reduce future warranty claims.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and the Service Manager to schedule field jobs.
  • Explain and train onsite customers on repairs, installations, or testing conducted on scheduled machines.
  • Follow up with customers, vendors, and other personnel to resolve service issues to completion.
  • Read and interpret maintenance manuals, schematics, and blueprints for electrical, hydraulic, and diesel engine issues.
  • Provide occasional technical support over the phone.
  • Maintain a team-oriented, professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment.
  • Represent Astec in a positive, professional manner with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote a safe and healthy work environment and adhere to company policies and safety regulations.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as trained; maintain workspace cleanliness using 6S principles.
  • Attend a weekly department safety meeting.
Qualifications and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED; combination of education and experience as deemed sufficient by management.
  • Minimum 3+ years as a heavy equipment mechanic, assembler of heavy equipment, or related experience.
  • Minimum 3+ years with diesel mechanics, electrical, and hydraulics repair experience (preferred).
  • Proven mechanical skills in assembly and alignment of components, installation of bearings, and air system hookups.
  • Experience installing hydraulic pumps, motors, tanks, gear boxes and plumbing; welding and cutting experience.
  • Strong basic math, measurement, and unit conversion skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with customers, vendors, and team members; productive with limited supervision.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to perform tasks efficiently to meet service schedules.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; technical reporting and log keeping proficiency.
  • Capacity to learn quickly, detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, and adaptable under pressure.
  • Safety-conscious mindset with the ability to assess safety factors and operate a service vehicle safely at all times.
