The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) practices in the Cardiology Section of the MEDICINE Service to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The NP provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management.
DutiesThe NP practices to the full extent of their education, training, and certification. Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position. The NP has prescriptive authority for a panel of patients or program as indicated by their position. The NP is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for a population of patients.
- Uses advanced clinical judgement to independently provide evidence-based treatment to Veterans with Cardiac health conditions with an emphasis on using evidence-based practice.
- Develops and implements an individualized plan to achieve optimal disease management.
- Demonstrates leadership and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.
- Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.
- Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
- Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services.
- Provides education to patients and their families.
- Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Preferred Experience- Experience in managing patients with a variety of cardiac clinical issues, including but not limited to arrhythmias, heart failure, cardiac implantable electronic devices, and coronary artery disease.
- Experience working in an outpatient cardiology clinic or similar environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high patient care standards.
- Skill in recognizing and escalating care for patients with unstable or complex cardiovascular problems that require a higher level of care.
- Strong clinical decision-making and critical thinking abilities.
- Familiarity with using and interpreting cardiovascular diagnostic tools and imaging techniques such as EKG, echocardiography, and stress testing.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to handle a busy outpatient clinic setting.
