Overview/Summary

The Behavioral Health Counselor will provide professional counseling services to individuals and groups, supporting clients in overcoming dependencies, managing mental health challenges, and making meaningful life adjustments. The role involves treatment planning, crisis intervention, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, and educational support to promote overall well‑being.

Responsibilities
  • Counsel clients individually or in group sessions to assist with overcoming dependencies, life adjustments, or behavioral changes.
  • Complete and maintain accurate patient records, histories, progress notes and documentation of services provided.
  • Develop treatment plans based on clinical experience, research and client histories.
  • Conduct and facilitate chemical dependency program group sessions.
  • Participate in case conferences and staff meetings.
  • Coordinate care with mental health professionals, physicians, nurses and social workers.
  • Review and evaluate clients’ progress toward measurable treatment goals.
  • Interview clients and review records to evaluate physical and mental conditions and determine program suitability.
  • Plan and implement follow-up and aftercare programs for discharged clients.
  • Assess levels of drug dependency through collection and analysis of urine samples.
  • Evaluate mental health issues and determine potential need for medication referral.
  • Provide crisis intervention and advocate for clients during emergency situations.
  • Modify treatment plans to reflect changes in client status.
  • Provide clients and families with information on addiction, resources and available support programs.
  • Coordinate activities with courts, probation officers and community service agencies.
  • Counsel family members to support their understanding and involvement in treatment.
  • Supervise or direct staff, student interns or new team members.
  • Act as a liaison between clients and medical staff.
  • Follow up with discharged patients to evaluate treatment effectiveness.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of PHI and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  • Provide crisis intervention and management support across departments and locations.
  • Consult with managers on complex employee mental‑health related situations.
  • Present educational materials to employees to support personal and professional development.
Primary Skills
  • Strong listening, verbal communication and written communication skills.
  • High social perceptiveness and strong critical‑thinking ability.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive situations professionally.
Secondary Skills (Good To Have)
  • Experience with AODA (Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse) programs.
  • Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusion within counseling practice.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Clinical Social Work or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience providing short‑term counseling to individuals and families in a mental health setting.
