Surg Tech First Assist - Baroness Hospital - Elective Ortho - PRN

Location: Erlanger Baroness Hospital, Chattanooga, TN

Overview: A Surgical First Assistant Practitioner provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. All functions are performed under the direction and supervision of the surgeon.

• Responsibilities:
  • Assist in patient positioning and visualization of the operative site by appropriate placement of retractors.
  • Assist with hemostasis, wound closure, and application of wound dressings.
  • Perform documentation and demonstrate knowledge and skills required to perform the Surgical First Assistant role.
  • Assist in preoperative and postoperative patient care to facilitate proper patient care.
• Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an approved Surgical Technologist School with completion of a First Assistant Course or Orthopaedic Physician Assistant Program (Required).
  • Orthopedic Physician Assistant (Preferred).
  • Completion of First Assistant Certification (Required).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, completed prior to starting the unit and maintained thereafter.
  • Completion of 8 hours of Erlanger Online Education specific to Total Ankle, Hip, Knee and Shoulder Replacement (Required).
  • Completion of 4 hours of Erlanger Online Education upon hire; additional training will be assigned by Department Leadership and/or Educator.
  • Two (2) years experience as a Surgical Technician in the operating room (Preferred).
• Education: Graduate approved Surgical Technologist School with completion of First Assistant Course or Orthopaedic Physician Assistant Program.
