Overview
Hamilton County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) must respond rapidly and efficiently to crises, disasters, or other public emergencies. EMS maintains a call system to store contact information and mobilize staff in such situations. ALL employees must keep their contact information current and be accessible during emergencies. During a public emergency, all staff are required to respond to mobilization calls and work hours may be modified to meet community needs.
Shift& Hours
This posting is for the 24/72 shift schedule. The base hours for this position are 1,872 regular hours and 312 hours of mandatory scheduled overtime due to the 24/72 shift schedule. Mandatory overtime will be paid at time and a half.
Essential FunctionsUnder close supervision, performs emergency, pre‑hospital care and transport of critically injured or ill patients within licensing parameters.
Qualifications- Minimum 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current Tennessee AEMT license or national registration with eligibility for Tennessee licensure prior to employment.
- Valid Tennessee Class D driver’s license or equivalent.
- Physical ability test to demonstrate ability to perform required duties.
- Written medical knowledge and decision‑making exam.
- Oral interview to evaluate poise, presentation, and verbal skills.
- Certification in Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) and ongoing maintenance.
- Retention of all State of Tennessee certifications and licenses.
Job requires high physical fitness and ability to function effectively in heavy, cumbersome protective gear. Must lift, carry, and move people and equipment weighing up to 150 pounds individually or 300 pounds as a two‑person team in varying terrain and unpredictable weather. Physical tasks include standing, walking, running, sitting, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and handling/grasping equipment. Exposure to hazardous environments (dust, fumes, gas, fire, smoke, adverse weather, chemicals) and potential bodily harm from violent patients or accidents is inherent.

Job duties may change at any time. Overtime hours are mandatory but may be adjusted based on community needs. Positions are work‑in‑person and require regular, punctual attendance, possibly on holidays, weekends, and with irregular or extended shift hours.
