Overview

The Tennessee/Georgia Market Chief Medical Officer (MCMO) is a senior leadership role with market responsibilities aligned to market, region and national priorities. The MCMO’s primary responsibilities are at both the hospital(s) and market level. The role reports to the Tennessee/Georgia Market President with matrix reporting to the Hospital Presidents and the South Region Chief Medical Officer (RCMO). The MCMO has a dyad relationship with the Market Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and with the Market Physician Enterprise President to lead clinical care delivery and key clinical service lines across the CHI Memorial market.

Market

The MCMO is a key Executive Market team member who partners to develop and implement market operating and growth plans across strategy, operations, and care delivery. The MCMO builds leadership teams to enable rapid implementation of clinical best practices, reduce unnecessary variation, and improve the quality, efficiency, and cost of care at all market hospitals. Accountabilities include patient safety, patient experience, physician engagement, physician recruitment, and medical staff affairs.

The MCMO drives alignment and accountability across local hospitals, service lines, and providers in the market, and aligns with regional and national priorities.

Hospital

The Hospital Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a key Executive Hospital team member who partners to develop and implement hospital operating and growth plans, including strategy, operations, and care delivery. The Hospital CMO leads the hospital’s emphasis on high-value, safe patient care through oversight of physician performance, quality and clinical integration. The CMO provides clinical, operational, strategic, and cultural leadership to deliver high-value care across the continuum, advancing clinical operations, clinician alignment and satisfaction, and evidence-based programs, practices, and activities.

Outcomes include measures of quality of care, patient safety, efficiency, patient satisfaction, and financial performance.

Key responsibilities
  • The MCMO serves as the primary liaison between the Market President, the RCMO and other market leadership. Communicates national and regional priorities and expectations; relays concerns, questions and suggestions from market and hospital colleagues to the RCMO.
  • Collaborates with the RCMO and MCNO to disseminate and support national clinical goals, advance clinical excellence (quality, patient safety and patient experience), promote adherence to clinical standards, reduce unnecessary clinical variation, and ensure regulatory readiness. Monitors clinical performance and supports facilities and service lines that are under-performing, involving the RCMO as appropriate.
  • Leads local physician engagement and well-being efforts within the market with the Market President and physician enterprise leaders to set strategic direction and increase market competitiveness.
  • Leads service lines, medical directors, and medical staff activities at each facility in the market; partners with the Chief(s) of Staff and the market Medical Staff Office director to credentialing, privileging, and peer review.
  • Sets strategic direction for the above areas, developing and integrating plans to support CHI Memorial’s vision, mission, and strategies.
  • Provides medical leadership oversight for high-quality, cost-effective, integrated clinical programs across the market and in ambulatory settings.
  • Fosters collaboration between clinical departments, service lines, medical staff leadership, and affiliated services to meet clinical, research and educational goals.
  • Establishes medical director councils/clinical program leadership groups to conduct clinical operations, clinical integration, and population health management. Collects and shares trend data and works with groups to develop and monitor improvement plans.
  • Participates in care coordination programs, monitoring the appropriateness of procedures, admissions and resource utilization.
  • Provides compliance and accreditation oversight for licensing agencies, coordinating with CHI Memorial’s Corporate Responsibility Office as appropriate.
