Superintendent - Water​/Wastewater

Job Overview

The Water Superintendent is responsible for the efficient operation of the entire water supply system, from source to tap. This role involves a wide range of tasks, including overseeing maintenance schedules, managing water treatment processes, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. The position requires a strong background in water systems engineering, excellent managerial skills, and a deep understanding of regulatory requirements.

The Water Superintendent works closely with other departments and external agencies to ensure the highest standards of water quality and service.

• Supervise the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal water quality standards.
• Develop and implement maintenance schedules and procedures.
• Manage emergency response to water supply disruptions or contamination.
• Prepare and manage budgets for water department operations.
• Conduct inspections of water facilities and infrastructure.
• with other city departments and external agencies.
• Oversee water quality testing and monitoring programs.
• Manage and supervise staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
• Prepare reports and presentations for city officials and the public.
• Develop and implement water conservation programs.
• Ensure accurate record-keeping of water usage and maintenance activities.
• Oversee the repair and replacement of aging infrastructure.
• Implement new technologies and processes to improve water service efficiency.

• Bachelors degree in civil engineering, environmental science, or a related field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Certified Water Operator credentials.
• Experience with SCADA systems.
• Strong project management skills.
• Knowledge of GIS mapping software.
• Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
• Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Experience in budgeting and financial management.
• Extensive experience in water system operations and management.
• Strong understanding of water treatment processes.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements for water quality.
• Experience in managing staff and resources.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
• Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies effectively.
• Proficiency in using computer software for data analysis and reporting.
