Job Overview
The Water Superintendent is responsible for the efficient operation of the entire water supply system, from source to tap. This role involves a wide range of tasks, including overseeing maintenance schedules, managing water treatment processes, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. The position requires a strong background in water systems engineering, excellent managerial skills, and a deep understanding of regulatory requirements.
The Water Superintendent works closely with other departments and external agencies to ensure the highest standards of water quality and service.
- Supervise the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal water quality standards.
- Develop and implement maintenance schedules and procedures.
- Manage emergency response to water supply disruptions or contamination.
- Prepare and manage budgets for water department operations.
- Conduct inspections of water facilities and infrastructure.

- Oversee water quality testing and monitoring programs.
- Manage and supervise staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
- Prepare reports and presentations for city officials and the public.
- Develop and implement water conservation programs.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping of water usage and maintenance activities.
- Oversee the repair and replacement of aging infrastructure.
- Implement new technologies and processes to improve water service efficiency.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelors degree in civil engineering, environmental science, or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Certified Water Operator credentials.
- Experience with SCADA systems.
- Strong project management skills.
- Knowledge of GIS mapping software.
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
- Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Experience in budgeting and financial management.
- Extensive experience in water system operations and management.
- Strong understanding of water treatment processes.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements for water quality.
- Experience in managing staff and resources.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies effectively.
- Proficiency in using computer software for data analysis and reporting.
