About The Position

At Astec, we are building a world‑class electrical hardware and controls software engineering team. The Electrical Engineer will work on the development of control/automation systems for heavy construction equipment, such as road pavers, road mills, wood chippers, and grinders. The role includes product requirement creation, electrical hardware design, schematic generation, PCB layout, junction‑box design, wiring harness routing, and detailed design reviews with a strong focus on Design for Reliability (DfR).

The engineer may also contribute to software design, code development, and unit/integration testing, collaborating closely with Mechanical and Software Engineers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works with cross‑functional Product Management to produce complete Product Functional Specifications.
  • Applies structured system design techniques to decompose product function requirements.
  • Advances simplicity and reliability of equipment through sensor and control device knowledge.
  • Adapts designs to meet domestic and international electrical standards, minimizing model count.
  • Employs Design for Reliability processes to achieve desired reliability and TCO.
  • Generates modular, testable, and replaceable electrical hardware designs.
  • Executes bench tests with the Controls Software Engineer to verify modules before integration.
  • Uses computer‑aided engineering tools to create electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Develops PCB layouts, 3‑D junction‑box designs, and routed harnesses with plug‑in capability.
  • Leads cross‑functional design reviews, including DFM and DFR.
  • Produces documentation such as work instructions, training manuals, troubleshooting guides, and test plans.
  • Identifies improvements for product and cost reductions.
  • Champions project delivery, maintaining schedule, budget, and feature set.
  • Enhances design processes and capabilities across the engineering team.
  • Develops and validates electrical and software test plans.
  • Participates in software and HMI design and review.
  • Assists customers via telephone or on‑site to resolve application issues.
  • Works with Manufacturing, Service, Purchasing, and Publications to solve production and field issues.
  • Adheres to all Astec design and coding standards and follows safety procedures.
  • Performs engineering calculations as required and accepts other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years in industrial or mobile equipment control design.
