Overview
Estimator (Chattanooga, TN) — Berry Construction Company, a leading General Contractor in the Eastern U.S., is actively seeking a qualified Estimator to join our Chattanooga office. An Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed estimates for a project based on the construction drawings and specifications and communicating bids and scopes of work.
Reports to:
Senior Estimator, Vice-President of Preconstruction, or Executive Vice President
- Perform multiple, complex estimating assignments.
- Develop all levels of estimates, including conceptual through final design. Estimates should include project benchmarks and value analysis.
- Prepare and assemble bids and proposals for different contract types (e.g., Lump Sum, Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP), Cost Plus).
- Work with project team on general requirements, including fees, financials, staffing of jobs, and construction schedules.
- Demonstrate thorough understanding of scope definition and communicate pricing requirements clearly to subcontractors.
- Prepare detailed estimates including completing quantity take-offs, analysis, estimate input, and studies for items incorporated in assigned scope.
- Develop value analysis study including defining more cost-efficient alternatives to proposed scope.
- Gain full comprehension of factors required for comprehensive trade package scope including contract documents, site logistics, schedule, coordination, means and methods.
- Prepare scope requisitions for assigned trades as required; coordinate with project team to identify and eliminate scope gaps and overlaps.
- Prepare comparison analysis to previous estimate for assigned scope.
- Obtain and evaluate trade partner proposals relative to their scope of work, document and organize information into Bid, and participate in Post Bid Review.
- Manage action items from Post Bid and finalize trade partner scope and make recommendations to Project Lead for bid awards.
- Occasionally visit jobsites to gain understanding of estimate accuracy and impact.
- Work with Trade partners and Design team to assist with proposal preparation for potential business development.
- Develop subcontractor and supplier relationships.
- Establish and maintain relationships with architects, owners, engineers, designers, clients, and others for potential business development.
- Provide leadership and mentoring to less experienced estimators.
- Gather historical data from past/on-going projects for use in future estimates.
- May perform other activities, duties, and responsibilities as necessary or assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction, engineering, or related field preferred
- 4-10 years of estimating and/or combination of estimating and project management experience
- Building construction, materials, systems, market conditions, trade practices knowledge
- Able to read, understand and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work and project schedule
- Knowledge of estimating documents and ability to provide accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of documents
- Able to work with minimum information and quickly develop understanding of owner/architect requirements
- Able to manage competing demands, and meet established deadlines
- Familiar with operating procedures and methods of other departments – Procurement, Operations
- Professional verbal and written communication skills with project team, designers, and trade partner market
- Proficient computer skills and Microsoft Office suite of applications, and familiar with estimating software
