Role purpose

On Prince Edward Island, CBC is a powerhouse. The Managing Editor will lead the 40 employees of CBC PEI and be responsible for the journalism, programming and staffing at the station in Charlottetown. The ideal candidate will ensure CBC talks about what matters to the public we serve and shares stories across all platforms (mobile, connected TVs, radio, terrestrial TV and You Tube).

You will work in collaboration with Radio-Canada management to support the needs of French Services staff who work at the station.

Responsibilities
  • Provide strategically driven editorial leadership daily for all programs and projects.
  • Oversee application of CBC’s journalistic standards and practices.
  • Develop and execute strategy to strengthen local journalism and deepen community connections.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work culture through feedback, coaching and staff development.
  • Build and maintain strong connections between the local team and colleagues across the country to benefit CBC News.
  • Build and maintain strong connections with French Services in Atlantic Canada.
  • Collaborate with Managing Editors and other leaders to achieve strategic goals.
  • Network with community leaders and groups to build relationships.
  • Ensure all CBC policies and procedures are followed.
  • Address complaints to the CBC Ombudsman as needed.
  • Work with finance staff to track costs and manage budgets.
  • Hire and support training and development of journalism staff.
  • Work closely with the legal team when required.
Experience and qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years' related leadership experience, including newsroom leadership.
  • Proven track record guiding complex journalistic decision making.
  • Experience applying journalistic standards and practices in a daily newsroom.
  • Interest in and understanding of media trends for multiplatform journalism.
  • Ability to make rapid decisions under tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for journalistic and programming matters.
  • Experience leading a team during major breaking news events.
  • Knowledge of broadcasting and journalism law.
  • Experience hiring and supporting new staff in journalism settings.
  • Ability to communicate in French and/or an Indigenous language is an asset.
  • Experience with community stakeholder engagement.

This role is based at the Charlottetown station with an expectation of working from the station.
