Motor Equipment Operator II performs semi-skilled work in the safe operation, maintenance, installation, and/or repair of specialized equipment assigned to Refuse Collection and Disposal
. Work is done under general supervision of and reports to a Crew Supervisor.
- Tuesday - Friday: 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM
The hiring amount for this position is between $23.42 - $28.78 an hour ($48,713.60 - $59,862.40 annually
) in accordance with the Labor and Trades Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) effective July 1, 2025. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity.

- The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. - Operates light, medium, and large heavy equipment in the maintenance, excavation, and repair work for assigned area. Equipment may include but is not limited to front end loader, back-hoe, trencher, large tractors with hydraulic arms, mowers/bush hogs, bucket truck, chipper, mowing equipment, sweepers, rollers, televising and sewer cleaning equipment.
- Operates snow equipment and removal of storm debris during inclement weather.
- Performs duties associated with street/sidewalk repair and construction, right-of-ways, refuse and street-sweeping.
- Identifies necessary equipment and evaluates/determines methods for accomplishing the job/site specification.
- Transports necessary equipment to and from the job site.
- Performs work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and applicable Federal, State and City standards and specification.
- Services, provides preventative maintenance, and makes minor repairs to equipment.
- Inputs information and data into the work order system.
- Assists supervisors in emergency operations and special events in more complex tasks.
- Responds to special events and emergency related situations including inclement weather situations.
- Trains others in the proper use of equipment.
- Periodically performs semi-skilled manual tasks in connection with the equipment operated, if applicable.
- Attends meetings and trainings concerning safety, procedures, and practices.
- Subject to being called back to work to the City in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public. Must have the ability to be contacted and respond based on Departmental guidelines.
- Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Provides additional duties to support operational requirements as needed and assigned.
- High school diploma or GED AND 1 year of field experience in the operation of a variety of medium/large, motorized equipment.
- 3 years of field experience in the operation of a variety of medium/large, motorized equipment.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
- Required to obtain and maintain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement AND a Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) Safety-Intermediate Level Certification, within 6 months of employment.
- Subject to emergency and stand-by call and must respond within minimum response time to the City facility based on Departmental guidelines. (For Utilities 40‑minute response time)
- Required to successfully pass a pre‑employment background check, physical and drug test.
- Position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
