Position: Maintenance Worker III - Water/Wastewater Operations (Utilities)

Overview

The Maintenance Worker III performs semi-skilled work in a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction assignments, safely using specialized tools and operating equipment to complete assigned work as part of the Water/Wastewater Division in the Department of Utilities
. Work is performed under the general supervision of and reports to a Maintenance Crew Supervisor II.

Compensation and Benefits

The preferred hiring range for a Maintenance Worker III is between $20.45 - $25.14 an hour ($42,536.00 - $52,291.20 Annually
). This is a full-time, non-exempt position which provides benefits including 13 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit. Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the CBA between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative.

Responsibilities
  • Performs skilled pipe fitting duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water/wastewater/stormwater systems. Works with pipes, fittings, valves, fire hydrants and manholes.
  • Operates the Closed-Circuit Television Sewer Main Inspection (CCTV) as a preventative maintenance tool, including pre-acceptance inspections and identifying major or minor breaks before they become emergencies.
  • Operates sanitary vacuum truck to provide preventative maintenance by jetting and cleaning sewer mains to avoid potential overflows.
  • Performs maintenance, repair, and construction work utilizing specialized tools/equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulations. May include flagging, digging trenches, skilled pipe fitting, right-of-way, or other construction duties based on assignment.
  • Inspects and prepares the job site for maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, and/or grounds.
  • Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with maintenance, repair, custodial, and construction operations.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment according to project needs, including but not limited to front-end loader, dump truck, jackhammer, tamper, and/or other equipment relevant to assignment.
  • Conducts cleanup and restoration work on assignments.
  • Ensures work is performed in accordance with safety standards and standard operating procedures, including traffic control, signage, barricades, lane closures, and proper use of equipment and tools.
  • Assists senior workers in emergency operations and special events for more complex tasks.
  • Completes work according to maintenance standards and maintains care of tools and equipment.
  • Follows safety regulations, adheres to checklists, and attends safety trainings; may respond to special events and emergencies, including inclement weather.
  • May be called back to work in emergencies or as needed to provide services to the public; must have the ability to be contacted and respond per Departmental guidelines.
  • Responsible for the appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools, and other resources; maintains regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties
  • May serve in a lead role in skilled work on site projects and in the use of tools and equipment, providing guidance, training, or instruction.
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
Education and Experience

Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.
