Overview
The Center for Diabetes Technology (CDT) and the University of Virginia School of Medicine invite applicants for multiple Postdoctoral Research Associate positions focused on highly complex technology, algorithm development, and data management and analysis. CDT is a world leader in diabetes technology and the hub of an international research network of leading U.S. institutions. We advance the use of technology, including analytics, to improve data and operational management, monitoring, and therapies for patients with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.
Postdoctoral Research Associates will report to Marc Breton, PhD. Dr. Breton received the 2022 Edlich‑Henderson Innovator of the Year award and, with Dr. Boris Kovatchev, developed the first FDA‑approved simulation environment for pre‑clinical insulin assessment, paving the way for an artificial pancreas that automatically regulates blood glucose levels. Breton has submitted 55 invention disclosures to the U.S. Patent Office and is a named inventor on 27 issued patents.

Dr. Boris Kovatchev, PhD, directs CDT and is a world‑renowned researcher in diabetes, algorithm development, and data science. He leads large NIH‑funded trials, including the three largest randomized artificial pancreas clinical trials, one of which led to a pivotal trial for regulatory clearance. Responsibilities- Conduct supervised and independent research for the Center for Diabetes Technology and expand center‑related research lines in
- Use of machine learning methods for risk prediction, control, classification, and treatment progression
- Metabolic and behavioral computer simulations related to diabetes and pre‑diabetes
- Modeling, simulation, and model‑based analysis of glucose metabolism and control
- Validation and testing of in silico‑designed treatments and diabetes‑related technology
- Other duties as assigned
There are no clinical responsibilities associated with this position. However, the successful candidate will have regular access to physicians through the UVA School of Medicine.
QualificationsEducation:
Doctoral degree completed at the time of hire.
Research experience in machine learning, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, advanced mathematics, or diabetes data science.
Compensation and BenefitsSalary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Employment DurationPostdoctoral employment is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a doctoral degree within the previous five years. This is a 12‑month appointment with the possibility of renewal (for an additional two, one‑year increments) contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
LocationThis position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on‑site.
