Veterinary Assistant – Specialty Department
Are you passionate about advancing your skills and supporting animals through specialized care? Join the Specialty Department at Virginia Veterinary Specialty & Emergency as a Veterinary Assistant dedicated to our Oncology Department and be part of a collaborative team that provides advanced medicine in surgery, internal medicine, and other specialty services.

The Veterinary Assistant will support our veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians in the care and treatment of patients within our specialty services. This role combines hands‑on patient care with essential support tasks to ensure smooth daily operations, excellent client communication, and the highest quality of medical care.

Schedule and Opportunities
  • Full‑time schedule: 10 hours shifts Monday‑Friday (occasional weekends)
  • Dedicated to our Specialty Department (supporting Surgery and Cardiology)
  • Opportunities to build skills alongside specialists, LVTs, and fellow assistants while gaining exposure to advanced procedures and treatments
Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities
  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations and procedures.
  • Restrain cats and dogs; some exotic pet experience or interest a plus.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date patient records (log patient weights, process lab specimens, and update client records).
  • Maintain cleanliness of hospital (clean, well stocked pharmacy and exam rooms, patient cages, and equipment maintenance).
  • Interact with clients in a compassionate and professional manner.
  • Facilitate the proper flow of appointments.
  • Provide information to clients regarding fees, preventives, medication, prescription diets and wellness packages.
  • Reinforce veterinarian recommendations.
  • Perform other tasks as needed to support the veterinary team.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Minimum 1 year of veterinary assistant experience required.
  • Dependable.
  • Self‑motivated.
  • Excellent cleaning skills.
  • Able to work weekends and evenings.
  • Excellent communication.
  • Team player.
  • Must be able to lift 50 squirming pounds.
