Overview
Arborist role at University of Virginia Facilities Management, Landscape Services Department. The Arborist provides expertise on tree health and safety, may perform duties and manage contracted tree-care staff and department grounds staff, with work in accordance with ANSI A300 standards. Develops positive working relationships and can work independently or lead teams. Demonstrates tactful communication and strong computer, tablet, and/or smartphone usage to navigate UVA systems and email.
Responsibilities- Assess and determine needs, risks, and health issues of the University’s trees.
- Take steps to alleviate identified issues with safety as a primary consideration; may include pruning, cabling, fertilization, pest control, and full removals.
- Advise area Supervisors regarding actions necessary for tree health within their zones.
- Provide directions to and guide staff in completion of special projects.
- Proper operation of arborist tools (e.g., chainsaws, chippers, hand saws, pole saws, pruners, climbing harnesses, ropes, throw bags).
- Maintain computer-based inventory tracking the status of University trees and work performed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Education:
High School Degree or GED. - Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience. - Licensure:
Valid Driver’s License with a zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving experience; ISA certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire. - Skills:
Proficient in computer skills related to emails, spreadsheets, presentations, and scheduling.
Anticipated Compensation: $25.00-$30.00/hour ($52k - $62,400 annually), commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits.
Selected candidates will be required to complete all required background checks prior to the first day of employment. This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
Physical Demands: Standing, traveling, and lifting various weights; use of landscape equipment and materials; repetitive motion while pruning, climbing, driving, and operating equipment; exposure to varying temperatures and to noise from machinery; potential exposure to contaminants and chemicals from fuel and fertilizers.
