Position: Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP) Pediatric Psychiatry

Overview

The Division of Pediatric Psychiatry provides comprehensive mental health services for children and adolescents across outpatient, emergency, and consultative settings. As part of an academic health system and regional referral center, the division supports interdisciplinary care, training of future mental health professionals, and collaboration with community partners including schools, primary care practices, and community service boards. The department plays a critical role in addressing the growing demand for pediatric behavioral health services across the region, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations.

The Pediatric Psychiatry Advanced Practice Provider provides comprehensive outpatient psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management for children and adolescents with a range of behavioral health conditions. This role supports timely access to specialty mental health care through direct patient care, coordination with families and community partners, and collaboration within an interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities
  • Documents clinical encounters in the electronic health record in a timely and accurate manner
  • Coordinates care with internal and external providers, schools, and community agencies
  • Participates in clinic workflow processes that support access, continuity, and quality of care
  • Assists with care coordination, referrals, and follow up planning for patients with complex needs
  • Practices in accordance with state regulations, scope of practice, and institutional policies
  • Engages in continuing education related to child and adolescent psychiatry and psychopharmacology
  • Participates in team meetings, case discussions, and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Contributes to a respectful, family centered, and culturally responsive care environment
  • Provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations for children and adolescents in an outpatient setting
  • Delivers ongoing medication management and monitoring for a range of psychiatric conditions
  • Develops individualized, developmentally informed treatment plans in collaboration with patients and families
  • Provides psychoeducation to patients and caregivers regarding diagnoses, medications, and treatment options
  • Collaborates with psychiatrists, therapists, primary care providers, schools, and community partners to support coordinated care
  • Identifies and responds to safety concerns, including risk assessment and appropriate triage
  • Supports the educational mission of the division through collaboration with trainees and learners when appropriate
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing access and clinical care
  • Serves as a clinical liaison with community partners to strengthen care coordination for pediatric patients
  • Demonstrates accountability, teamwork, and commitment to the mission of pediatric behavioral health services
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree.

Experience:

Department and unit specific.

Licensure:
License or license eligible as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

Physical Demands:
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive);
Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills;
Attention to detail and ability to write legibly;
Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

Starting base rate for this role is $96,907.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
