Overview

Virginia Organizing is a non-partisan statewide grassroots organization dedicated to challenging injustice by empowering people in local communities to address issues that affect the quality of their lives. Founded in 1995, Virginia Organizing has 16 active local chapters across the state.

Job Responsibilities

As Virginia Organizing’s Director of Operations, you will manage and strengthen internal systems to increase support and accountability among Virginia Organizing’s growing staff. Working closely with the Executive Director in this new position, you will oversee budgeting, reporting, benefits, and planning to ensure the organization’s long-term wellbeing. Your contributions will touch all aspects of Virginia Organizing to create the most effective, well-run grassroots organization possible.

As part of a diverse, hard-working, and values-driven staff, you will help real people make real change at the local, state, and national levels. Specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Organizational Leadership
    • Partner with the Executive Director in developing and managing organizational plans, including integration of operational priorities across teams
    • Lead organization-wide project management, including resource planning, prioritization of tasks, and progress reporting
    • Act as a key operational thought partner with senior leadership, connecting strategic goals to actionable operations systems
    • Assess organizational needs and implement improved systems, policies, and structures
    • Identify inefficiencies in staff operations and build sustainable solutions across the organization
  • Organizational Administration
    • Oversee staff administrative operations, including payroll processing, benefits enrollment processes, timekeeping systems, and employment/nonprofit compliance, in coordination with the Director of Finance and Administration
    • Serve as the primary owner of operational platforms (e.g., Google Workspace), including user permissions, security practices, and onboarding/offboarding processes
  • People and Culture
    • Promote a staff culture that encourages top performance and high morale
    • Coordinate recruitment, hiring, and onboarding for new staff
    • Coordinate staff development and annual performance review processes

You want to use your critical thinking and interpersonal skills to build a powerful statewide organization.

Virginia Organizing’s starting salary for this position is $70,000 and increases with experience. Full-time employees receive generous benefits, including full health, dental, vision, and childcare benefits, in addition to paid vacation, sick, parental, and family leave.

Skills Required
  • At least three years of relevant experience in operations, office management, or administration
  • Experience working independently, which includes managing your own work schedule, setting priorities, and accomplishing long-term goals
  • Ability to communicate clearly and thoroughly, with outcomes and solutions in mind
  • Strong personal organizational skills
  • Experience working in diverse organizations across racial and cultural lines
  • Competency with standard office software (Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Quickbooks, work coordination platforms)
  • Ability to work in-person at the Charlottesville office at least once a week
Work Schedule

Ability to work in Charlottesville office at least once a week. Generally this will be a 40 hour a week position.
