This position is responsible for:
Under the direct supervision of the Commanding Officer and the indirect supervision of the Divisional Development Director, the Director of Development creates and oversees the implementation of a strategic approach to advance community relations, promote donor care, and increase fundraising results through major gifts, corporate donations, grants, direct mail, digital fundraising, special events, seasonal campaigns, and in-kind resources.
Key Responsibilities:
- Increases overall revenue on an annual basis as established in the annual fundraising plan.
- Creates a comprehensive annual development plan in consultation with the Corps Officer and Divisional Development Director (DDD) that sets specific goals and strategies to advance community relations, promote donor care, and increase fundraising results to ensure that resources are available to meet the needs of the command; processes annual development plan through TSAMM for Divisional Finance Board approval.
- In collaboration with the Divisional Donor Services & Cultivation Manager and marketing vendor, provides oversight to the direct mail program; reviews appeals and assets and ensures same are consistent with programs and services; ensures appeals are mailed timely; ensures acknowledgment letters are up to date and accurate; participates in annual Direct Mail Roundtable and offers suggestions to Officer to make program more effective and efficient.
- Builds relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization.
- Oversees the planning and execution of special events as specified in the development plan.
- Develops a comprehensive communication and marketing plan to promote the organization and maximize public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization and of the value of Family Thrift Store.
- Maintains the integrity and hygiene of the Inter Change per the rules, policies, procedures, and minutes of The Salvation Army Southern Territory and Potomac Division; enters and updates pertinent donor information upon request and as needed and records all donor interactions in a timely and proper manner; ensures database security and donor information and record confidentiality; collaborates with the Divisional Donor Services & Cultivation Manager to address and resolve complex database issues.
- Supervises one to three department staff.
Physical Requirements and
Working Conditions:
- Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.).
- Duties are usually performed seated.
- Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.
- Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

What we are looking for in you
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, bookkeeping, business preferred or related field;
And - Two years' experience with general ledger accounting, depreciation, reconciliation, and advance spreadsheet/database production; knowledge of Great Plains (GP Dynamics 2010) preferred; experience performing three (3) or more of the following functions: A/R, A/P, Payroll, Auditing, Financial Reporting;
Or - Six years of equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
