Department OverviewThe Department of Computer Science in the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science is highly ranked and especially known for its work in computer systems, cyberphysical systems, cybersecurity, software engineering, and Artificial Intelligence. Position SummaryThe Department of Computer Science seeks an Information Technology Manager to provide leadership and management of its computing services group.
The computing services group supports the Department's instructional and research mission. This includes networking, desktop and server computing, file systems, storage, laboratory configuration, and overall computing facility operations.
The IT Manager serves as the liaison to the broader UVA computing community and is responsible for ensuring departmental compliance with UVA security policies.
Responsibilities Leadership & Management- Lead and manage the departmental computing services group.
- Manage and supervise departmental computer support staff.
- Serve as liaison to the larger UVA computing community.
- Oversee, maintain, and support the departmental computing facility.
- Coordinate equipment installation, OS installation, configuration, and power allocation.
- Manage networking, desktop and server computing environments.
- Support file systems, storage infrastructure, and laboratory configuration.
- Ensure compliance with UVA security policies.
- Oversee cybersecurity support and infrastructure.
- Develop equipment specifications and budgets for research grants.
- Provide user support for instructional and research computing needs.
- BA or BS degree.
- At least 4 years of experience in:
- Linux systems programming
- Linux systems administration
- Technical support
- Cybersecurity support
Education:
GED/High School Graduate required. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline preferred.
Experience:
Four years experience in IT related field.
Experience and familiarity with:
- Desktop hardware running Linux, MacOS, and Windows
- Server hardware, including GPU-accelerated systems
- Modern file systems (e.g., ZFS)
- Job scheduling systems (e.g., SLURM)
- Network infrastructure (routers and switches)
- Security infrastructure (firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS))
- Contemporary hardware platforms
This position may require moving and installing computer equipment, including lifting hardware and working within server and laboratory environments.
Position Type & Work LocationThis is a full-time position based in Charlottesville, Virginia.
