Job DutiesThe Virginia Department of Forestry is looking for an entry level Information Technology Specialist to support agency-wide applications as part of a team.
The successful candidate is a flexible and detail-oriented individual who works effectively individually and as part of a team to proactively problem-solve a wide variety of information technology tasks and effectively communicates with agency staff. This role requires writing SQL queries and stored procedures to support customer requests and the ability to write reports for an agency web-based application. Understanding and/or ability to quickly learn new information/skills to solve technical issues as part of help desk support for the agency.
Knowledge and experience with current technologies to include AWS and Windows server administration, HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript along with fundamentals of networking to support entry-level system administrator tasks.
Participate as a technical resource for agency projects and perform entry-level system administrator tasks and software testing. Act as the backup AITR (Agency Information Technology Resource) as needed. Act as helpdesk resource to resolve technical issues related to agency software applications, PCs, printers, and other peripherals.
This position is based in Charlottesville, VA with limited teleworking opportunities.
Minimum QualificationsUndergraduate and/or computer science studies or a related field; or equivalent experience required.
Experience writing SQL queries and stored procedures and ability to create reports for web-based applications.
Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) preferred.
Experience with ArcGIS Server a plus.
Experience with AWS and Windows server administration a plus.
Experience with GIS databases and applications a plus.
Demonstrated experience/understanding of end user computer hardware/Microsoft Office software products.
Basic knowledge and experience with current technologies to include HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript and software testing.
Knowledge of network fundamentals to support entry-level system administrator tasks.
Ability to write technical and non-technical support documentation.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support customer service with ability to manage requests received by telephone, in-person, and email.
Ability to effectively communicate with staff having diverse technical background and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
