The Enterprise Infrastructure team within UVA Information Technology Services (ITS) provides the foundational server, storage, and private cloud platforms that power the University's academic, research, and administrative systems. Our team delivers secure, resilient, and cost-effective infrastructure solutions that support UVA's mission of teaching, research, and public service.
Position SummaryThe University of Virginia seeks an Associate Director of Enterprise Platforms to lead the strategic direction, partner development efforts, and ongoing management of its private cloud, server, and storage infrastructure. This leadership role is critical to ensuring a high-performance, secure, and scalable on-premises private cloud environment, as well as the server OS and enterprise storage platforms that support UVA's broader hybrid cloud footprint.
The Associate Director will oversee diverse teams of managers, engineers, and developers, advancing our ability to automate and optimize the deployment and maintenance of essential infrastructure systems in a complex higher education environment.
Responsibilities Leadership & Team ManagementLead, mentor, and develop a team of managers, engineers, developers, and support staff building out core VMWare, Windows Server, RHEL, Ubuntu, Net App, and Cohesity services.
Champion a workplace culture built on high performance standards, personal responsibility, lifelong learning, and dedication to customer satisfaction.
Coordinate cross-functional collaboration and solution development with other IT teams, academic departments, and research units.
Continuously iterate the core design and cost optimization of UVA's private cloud, server, and storage environments.
Drive automation around provisioning, configuration, and patching efforts to improve efficiency and security compliance.
Partner with stakeholders to develop integrated solutions for complex business needs while sustaining a solid service delivery framework.
Manage a broad portfolio of contract server, storage, and custom solutions for University business units.
Oversee cost and chargeback models to maximize value and efficiency, ensuring offerings evolve to meet University needs.
Ensure systems adhere to institutional security policies and regulatory requirements (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA, CMMC).
Collaborate with Information Security to implement secure architectures and incident response procedures.
Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and partnerships with internal and external service owners.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in public cloud systems (hypervisors, servers, storage) across multiple environments, including at least three years in a management or team lead role.
Thorough understanding of automated private cloud orchestration tools and strategies spanning server OS environments, including patch administration and vulnerability management.
Demonstrated experience building and leading high-performing teams with a focus on mentoring and growing talent.
Relevant industry certifications (e.g., VMware, Red Hat, Windows Certifications, ITIL).
Understanding of managed service provider business models and chargeback frameworks.
Experience supporting the needs of academic and research computing environments.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage with faculty, researchers, and institutional leadership.
Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes in a dynamic academic environment.
Collaborative mindset with a focus on building strong partnerships across stakeholder groups.
This role is primarily sedentary, involving extensive use of desktop computers. The position may require occasional travel to UVA locations or vendor sites.
