You’ll have the chance to perform at a high level, incorporate system assessments into care, and demonstrate excellent practice and documentation to department standards with minimal-to-no variation.
Position compensation range: $30.13 - $48.21 hourly.
Responsibilities- Assesses respiratory care needs, applies diagnostic testing and therapeutic plans with skill and insight.
- Review patient records, collect data, and evaluate clinical information.
- Independently performs thorough respiratory assessments according to established guidelines, protocols and timelines.
- Proactively seeks guidance on evidenced-based guidelines & protocols and diagnostics to guide, evaluate response, and adjust care.
- Provide therapeutic interventions and prescribed medications according to protocols, guidelines, and orders.
- Identify patients who may benefit from advanced care approaches and escalate to others as needed.
- Recognize changes in clinical conditions and take steps to mitigate, and occasionally preempt.
- Recognize potential practice risk sources and promptly activate BeSafe when warranted.
- Document patient care according to professional standards and departmental guidelines.
- Verify orders and document key elements in a timely manner; ensure care reflects competency.
- Integrate patient and family goals into the care plan and medical record.
- Maintain personal documentation reflecting safety, quality, and care initiatives.
- Communicate patient response to RT interventions and recommend modifications to the care plan.
- Engage in shift hand-off in a clear, comprehensive, and participatory manner.
- Explain the respiratory care plan, rationale, and recommendations.
- Include cultural diversity, special needs, learning styles, age and gender identification in goals.
- Use IDEAL to explain care to patient and/or family and teach basic care elements.
- Communicate care responses to the patient and health team as requested.
- Demonstrate innovative application of technologies and evidence-based practice endorsed by the department.
- Stay current with departmental updates and apply changes promptly.
- Support quality initiatives by understanding processes, data, outcomes, and participating in QI activities.
- Use and manage equipment and supplies according to guidelines; participate in root cause analysis after events.
- Participate in departmental or organizational initiatives and precept learners 1:1 in respiratory elements.
- Commit to ongoing professional development, certifications, internal/external learning, and participation in professional organizations.
Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Minimum RequirementsEducation: Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy educational program. Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy required within 5 years of hire/transfer for all hires/transfers after 2019.
Experience: 12 months of acute/critical care respiratory therapy clinical experience required.
License/Certification: Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential with the NBRC. Virginia licensure required. AHA Health Care Provider BLS certification required. Active NBRC Specialty Credential (e.g., RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS) required within 2 years of hire for Medical Center Respiratory Therapists; ACLS required for TCH Respiratory Therapists within 3 months of hire.
Physical Demands: Standing for prolonged periods; frequent travel and bending/stooping. Ability to lift/push/pull 20-50 lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
