Pharmacy Technician
Prepares and delivers medications to patients and/or nursing units under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner. Online classroom training through Pharmacy Technician University. (Must pass Reading Comprehension and Math Pre-enrollment Assessments in three attempts or less. A minimum score of 70% is required for each assessment prior to acceptance into the program). Experiential training in our state-of-the-art pharmacy, Preparation for passing the national certification exam.
Candidates accepting a position will continue in their role as a pharmacy technician after completing the program and achieving their Virginia Registration. Candidates must complete Pharmacy Technician University and achieve registration within 2 years of employment.

About the DepartmentUVA Health’s Inpatient Pharmacy serves an average daily census of 528 patients across the hospital. Our pharmacy technicians are essential to the safe and timely delivery of medications, working under the supervision of licensed pharmacists or independent practitioners.
What We DoPharmacy Technicians in this department:
- Prepare and label medications for inpatient use
- Deliver medications directly to nursing units and patient care areas
- Support clinical workflows and medication safety protocols
- Collaborate with pharmacists to ensure accuracy and efficiency
Note:
Sterile compounding is performed in a newly renovated, state-of-the‑art IV clean room. Technician roles within the IV Room will be described separately.

- Education:
High School Graduate or Equivalent - Experience:
6 months minimum relevant experience - Licensure/
Certifications:
Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required. CPhT credential through National Health career Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required. For team members hired prior to February 1, 2020, certification as CPhT through NHA or PTCB is required by January 31, 2022.
Physical Demands – Job requires standing for prolonged periods. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills;
Attention to detail and ability to write legibly;
Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs.
Background checks and pre‑employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety‑sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.
The starting base rate for this role is $20.68 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
