Surgical Tech, Medical Assistant
These roles provide essential assistance to healthcare professionals in delivering patient care. Ensure the smooth functioning of clinical operations by handling tasks that support the diagnostic, therapeutic, and procedural aspects of patient care. Allied Health – Health Services professionals work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of medical services.
These roles focus on the preparation, performance, and post‑operative support to surgical teams. Responsibilities include sterilization, instrument preparation and handling, and operational or hands‑on support during surgery. May work in hospitals, surgical centers, and clinics, handling tasks from planning and preparation to recovery and follow‑up. This does not include perioperative nurses.
Individual Contributor RolesIndividuals in this stream have responsibility in a clinical discipline or specialty, spending the majority of their time delivering support services or activities. They typically work under supervision and have limited progression opportunities outside this career stream without additional education or training. A specialty license or certification, which is acquired through training and experience, is required.
Entry‑Level PositionThis role requires little to no prior knowledge or experience and may involve vocational or technical education. Work is routine, follows standard procedures, and is closely supervised. The job requires clear communication of information that requires little interpretation.
Minimum RequirementsEducation:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Currently enrolled or graduated from a surgical technologist training program accredited by CAHEEP/ABHES or NCCT.
Experience:
No experience required.
Licensure: BLS required. Must hold a certification to practice as a Surgical Technologist from NBSTSA or NCCT at the start date. Current registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine is required at hire.
Physical DemandsJob requires standing for prolonged periods, repetitive motion (passing instruments, lifting heavy sets), and proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and legible writing are essential. Ability to lift/push/pull >50–100 lbs. May be exposed to cold, radiation, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.
Position Compensation Range: $20.68 – $32.05 hourly.
