Job Description

JOB TITLE: Instructional Assistant

LOCATION: CATEC
SUPERVISOR: Principal
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: Provides administrative, clerical, and human support to the classroom teacher in the management and instruction of students; performs related tasks as required and directed; all work is performed under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher or Assistant Principal. These environments include auto mechanic shops, carpentry labs, and a professional culinary kitchen, among others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Follows and conducts the instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and, if appropriate, the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  • Provides classroom coverage as needed in an instructor’s absence
  • Develops and maintains a pleasant and orderly classroom environment (e.g., maintains instructional materials, assists the teacher and/or students in clean-up activities, etc.)
  • Assists the teacher in maintaining a safe classroom environment
  • Assists students in the completion of learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers
  • Assists the teacher in related instructional activities as directed
  • Assists in the physical movement of students from one learning environment to another
  • Performs such duties as monitoring bus arrival and departure, test proctoring, and facilitating small group testing as needed
  • Assists instructors with clerical tasks, including making copies, filing, and creating documents
  • Participate in team meetings
  • Supervises students during break time, transitions, and other non-instructional periods as directed by the teacher, Principal, or Assistant Principal (AP)
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or AP

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication; skills to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions; operate standard office equipment; knowledge of school policies and procedures; understanding of effective discipline procedures; ability to follow directions from the classroom teacher; knowledge of age/ability appropriate activities; safety practices and procedures; develop effective working relationships with students, families, and staff;

flexibility to be able to change processes quickly based on current situations; ability to communicate with diverse groups; problem-solving is needed to identify issues and help develop action plans; maintain confidentiality; ability to work as part of a team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

At least 60 hours of college credit or an associate’s degree or higher are preferred.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:

Duties are typically performed in a technical education school setting, including classrooms, labs, auditorium, and outdoor areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.

Daily personal close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and families may be required. Contacts with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated annually on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.

CONTRACT LENGTH: 10 months/200 days

Position Type: Full-Time

Salary: $18.57 to $28.79 Per Hour
