Overview

The Program Coordinator for the Residential Colleges (RCs) supports the academic and community life of the University of Virginia's three Residential Colleges. This shared position (live-off, based in Charlottesville, VA) is responsible for day-to-day operations, program coordination, and student advising across all RCs. The Program Coordinator works closely with the Faculty Principals, the Special Assistant, Housing & Residence Life and student leadership to advance the RCs' mission of integrating academic engagement, community building, and student self-governance.

This position is part of a coordinated professional staff team—including a Special Assistant and Financial Generalist—who collectively support the Residential Colleges. The Program Coordinator ensures operational consistency and excellence across the RCs while supporting each community's unique culture and intellectual focus.

Key Responsibilities Supervision, Student Leadership, and Advising
  • Supervise 3-4 undergraduate Senior Residents; indirectly supervise 35-40 Resident Advisors.
  • Support the Senior Residents in advising all three Residential College councils, fostering student leadership development and effective self-governance.
  • Administrative support of Residential College Councils' programmatic initiatives, including program development guidance, and purchasing.
  • Programmatic responsibility for cultivating a strong sense of community within Residential Colleges by mentoring student leaders and supporting student self-governance by providing training, resources, and leadership to enhance student engagement, foster connection, and promote a positive living experience.
  • Support the student-run Residential College application process, coordinating logistics, communications, and timelines.
  • Meet with residential students to provide resources and support by assisting in problem solving, roommate mediations, challenges, or concerns.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation.
Programming and Event Coordination
  • Manage day-to-day RC operations and coordinate programming logistics, including shared and college-specific events.
  • Support student leaders in designing, planning, and executing events aligned with RC missions and annual themes.
  • Collaborate with Housing & Residence Life staff, Faculty Principals, and the Special Assistant to implement RC programs and traditions.
  • Attend and assist with evening and weekend events as needed.
  • Participate as a regular member of each RC leadership team, contributing to planning and community strategy.
  • Contribute to annual assessment and reporting efforts, including event metrics, student participation data, and program evaluations.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Bachelor's Degree

Experience:

Two years of relevant experience required

  • Demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in building community, managing crisis, resolving conflicts, and promoting engagement.

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Student Affairs Administration, or related field.
  • 1-2 years of experience in student affairs, residential life, or program coordination.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for events as needed.
