General Definition Of Work

The Director of School, Family, and Community Relations provides division-level leadership to strengthen meaningful partnerships among schools, families, and the broader community in support of student success. The role does not directly implement instructional equity initiatives; rather, it supports transparency, engagement, and accountability by ensuring that families, schools, and community partners understand and can respond to division-wide trends and outcomes. The Director leads and coordinates family and community engagement strategies, communication structures, and collaborative practices that promote trust, shared responsibility, and responsiveness to the needs of students and families.

This position works in close partnership with the Educational Equity Data Scientist to explore, examine, and track division-level trends and educational issues and to apply data-informed insights to engagement strategies, programs, and practices. The Director also collaborates closely with the Executive Director of the Albemarle Foundation for Education (AFE) and the Work- and Community-Based Learning Coordinator to align family engagement, community partnerships, and workforce-connected learning efforts across the division.

The Director participates in division-level planning and decision-making and ensures that family and community engagement efforts are aligned with division priorities, school improvement plans, and evidence-based practices.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, guides, and advises the Assistant Superintendent for School and Community Engagement in the development, implementation, and evaluation of division-wide school, family, and community engagement strategies aligned with division priorities;
  • Designs, implements, and monitors systems that strengthen communication, collaboration, and trust among schools, families, businesses, workforce partners, and community organizations in support of student success;
  • Collaborates with the Educational Equity Data Scientist to analyze and monitor division, school, and community level data; study educational issues; track trends over time; and serve as an accountability and feedback loop to inform engagement strategies;
  • Translates data-informed findings into actionable strategies, tools, and best practices that support school administrators, staff, families, and community partners;
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director of the Albemarle Foundation for Education (AFE) and the Work and Community Based Learning Coordinator to align family engagement initiatives, community partnerships, and workforce-connected learning opportunities across the division;
  • Supports school leaders and staff in applying effective family and community engagement strategies aligned with school improvement goals and division priorities;
  • Designs, coordinates, and delivers outreach, learning opportunities, and engagement initiatives for families and community members;
  • Cultivates and maintains partnerships with local organizations, agencies, businesses, civic groups, and workforce partners to support student learning, career awareness, volunteering, and family engagement;
  • Creates systems to expand the number, diversity, and effectiveness of school volunteers and community partners;
  • Oversees systems for gathering, analyzing, and responding to family and community feedback;
  • Develops departmental strategic plans aligned with the division's strategic plan and school improvement plans, including budgeting and accountability measures;
  • Represents the division in community forums, business and workforce partnerships, and collaborative initiatives;
  • Performs related duties as assigned in accordance with school system policies and practices
