The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated and dynamic educator to teach 11th grade History of Western Thought starting in the 2026-27 school year. Our school, which serves over 750 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, is a gospel-centered community of faith and learning, rooted in the Western Liberal Arts tradition, and focused on the formation of the whole person—mind, body, and soul.
Our faculty leads with an incarnational approach that seeks to equip and inspire students to live well through service to God and others.
The eleventh grade humanities teacher will teach a course focused on the History of Western Thought. This required course traces the development of Western thought through the Classical, the Medieval, and the Modern periods. Students read selections from a number of seminal works from the ancient Greeks to the present and critically examine a host of perennial questions about the purpose of human existence, the nature of knowledge, the basis for morality, and the definition of the “good life.”
The ideal candidate will possess a mature, Christian faith and a strong background in and commitment to the Christian liberal arts tradition, with an ability to integrate the study of history with the art of rhetoric, written and spoken. They will possess an eagerness and ability to successfully collaborate with colleagues within the history department and across discipline areas in the 11th grade.
The successful candidate must enjoy working with high school students, and demonstrate the ability to inspire students' love of learning and critical thinking as they connect sophisticated ideas to their daily lives. They must have an enthusiasm for academic excellence, and an eagerness to share their Christian faith authentically in the context of their teaching.
To apply, please submit a résumé and cover letter to hickory-careers.
