Position: Behavior Specialist - Specialized Academic Center - 2025-26 School Year Only

Position Overview

2025-26 School Year Only.
This position will support the Specialized Academic Center team located at the Trailhead Learning Community. The students served by this team require intensive support. This person in this role will oversee the required intensive behavioral interventions, collaborate to develop supports to meet individual student needs, and supervise and train staff that support this specialized team. Behavior Specialist – Specialized Academic Center

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee intensive behavioral interventions and collaborate to develop supports for individual students.
  • Supervise and train staff supporting the specialized team.
  • Utilize knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies that focus on reducing problem behavior and increasing more appropriate behavior.
  • Complete effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function‑based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and prescribe work plans for individual students.
  • Research instructional strategies and effectively implement them.
  • Plan and evaluate strategies for improving instruction and provide needed support.
  • Assess and support instructional and behavioral programs for students.
  • Provide staff development and collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff to demonstrate best practices, strategies, and techniques to enhance instruction for students with social, communication, behavioral, and learning challenges.
  • Collaborate with staff division‑wide to develop understanding of a variety of methods to improve student behavior.
  • Develop and administer functional behavioral assessments and behavioral intervention plans using evidence‑based practices.
  • Assist with the design, implementation, and follow‑up of behavioral management programs for students to remediate behavioral and social problems.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to targeted students, including socialization activities.
  • Plan, coach, and confer with classroom teachers regarding any behavioral, social, or personal problems affecting the students.
  • Develop and conduct in‑service activities regarding techniques for remediation of behavioral, social, or personal problems of students.
  • Assist teachers with the development of safety plans; engage with families to plan for student success as needed.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining home‑school relations in crisis situations with students.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of program evaluation procedures.
  • Engage in weekly data collection, recording, and analysis for effective planning.
  • Assist with case‑management and team problem‑solving with other behavioral specialists, agency personnel, and appropriate professionals on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrate patience, respect, a receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, and understanding of the specific situation; utilize consulting skills to assure implementation and maintenance of intervention plans.
  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development by keeping current with the literature and new research findings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure in K‑12 Special Education.
  • Minimum of five years successful classroom teaching experience, preferably with at‑risk or behaviorally challenged students with special needs.
  • Knowledge of current trends and methodologies used to address the needs of children with behavioral challenges.
  • Extensive, successful experience in analyzing, assessing behavior, and developing, planning, and implementing behavioral interventions.
  • Experience in data collection, evaluation, development, and implementation of positive behavior intervention plans.
  • Knowledge of tiered intervention frameworks and best practices for students with behavioral challenges.
  • Knowledge of data tracking, collection, record management, and reporting methods.
