Position OverviewThe Kapnick Fellowship in Creative Writing is a post‑MFA/PhD Research Associate position designed to bring an emerging writer to the University of Virginia, one of the top‑ranked creative programs in the country. Fellows will participate in the vibrant writers’ community and teach innovative undergraduate workshops.
Fellowship DetailsThe nine‑month fellowship will begin in Fall 2026 and is only open to writers of poetry.
Salary: $47,000, plus eligibility for the full UVA benefits package. The teaching load is a 2‑1 model: two undergraduate creative‑writing workshops in the Fall and one in the Spring. Two of the three courses will be a multi‑genre introduction; the third will be designed by the fellow. The fellowship is residential, non‑renewable, and requires no other teaching, graduate study, or fellowship commitments.
The role is exempt‑level and fully on‑site in Charlottesville, VA.
Primarily a sedentary position involving extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel may be required for meetings and programs.
Minimum Qualifications- MFA or PhD in Creative Writing completed between January 2021 and August 1, 2026
- Some prior teaching experience
- A record of publication; a full‑length book published or under contract is not required
- Interest in secondary areas such as creative nonfiction, speculative fiction, screenwriting, young adult, graphic novels, creative multimedia, literary translation, or multi‑genre courses
