The University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy, in partnership with Campus Compact, the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), and More Perfect, is seeking a Graduate Assistant to support the creation of the Higher Education Democracy Exchange (HEDx) platform. The HEDx platform will be a dynamic, multi-functional, standalone platform that empowers higher education institutions to promote democratic engagement and advance civic and community learning.
One of the four functionalities of the HEDx platform is a ‘Scaling Civic Innovation’ resource hub, featuring curated tools and resources designed to scale impactful civic and community-based practices. The hub will include crowd-sourced best practices and model programs from across higher education emphasizing replication and scale. The Graduate Assistant will support the HEDx Advisors and project team in identifying and collating resources for the platform, and in developing inclusion parameters for post-launch uploading capabilities.
Resources will align with More Perfect’s Five Democracy Goals and sources such as web searches, conference presentations, systems like Give Pulse and Collaboratory, Carnegie Research Lab, and outreach to higher education stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist HEDx Advisors in resource collation and research related to the Five Democracy Goals.
- Support survey creation, administration, and analysis to identify additional relevant programs, guided by HEDx Advisors.
- Inventory existing resources and develop search criteria documentation.
- Contribute to creating resource display templates including summaries, tags, and source attributions.
- Participate in working sessions during UVA’s Democracy
360 event in Charlottesville, VA, October 15-17, 2025. - Perform additional data analysis tasks as agreed upon with HEDx Advisors and supervisors.
Anticipated Assignment Dates: August 2025 – April 2026
Position Details: Part-time, hourly, approximately 5-10 hours/week, mainly between August 2025 and January 2026.
Compensation: $25/hour
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current full-time graduate student at UVA.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately, complete tasks reliably, with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Experience with spreadsheets for managing large data sets.
