The Center for Leading Edge Addiction Research (CLEAR) at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Physician to support and manage the medical oversight of human clinical research trials which explore behavioral neuroscience and addiction, with a focus on innovative techniques and harm reduction as potential treatment for substance use disorders. The Research Physician will work under the direction of Professor Nassima Ait-Daoud Tiouririne, MD and in collaboration with the study team.
This position is responsible for ensuring high-quality clinical oversight, adherence to research protocols, and compliance with all institutional and federal regulations.
The CLEAR Research Physician will assist in conducting, and/or developing and designing, small to moderately complex research projects related to substance use disorders. This individual will serve as the primary medical provider for research participants while working under the ultimate supervision and approval of the principal investigator. They will collaborate and contribute to data analysis as well as to the writing and publication process.
The ideal candidate will bring enthusiasm, meticulous attention to detail, and a proactive, collaborative mindset, actively seeking opportunities to contribute to new initiatives and support fellow team members.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct medical assessments, safety monitoring, and other clinical screening evaluations for participants enrolled in SUD research studies, and manage related day-to-day processes.
- Oversee medical operations of clinical research activities, specifically including adverse event evaluation, documentation, and reporting.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams, including investigators, coordinators, and data staff.
- Assist in protocol development and study design as applicable.
- Manage clinical trials.gov listings for all trials and other regulatory tasks and duties as requested
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with GCP and UVA policies.
- Participate in data interpretation, manuscript preparation, and dissemination of research findings as appropriate.
- May contribute to publications and participate in presentations with the PI at meetings and conferences.
- This individual may also pursue independent research or other funding that complements the center’s work, with the approval and direction of the PI.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
The Research Physician is expected to operate with a degree of independence. In addition to a firm background in the particular field, this individual should demonstrate the ability to lead small groups and work without additional supervision once objectives are defined and methods of approach are set. As professional research staff, they are not expected to provide formal guidance to students or otherwise participate in the instructional program.
They will be principally engaged in research and in addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Initial appointments and reappointments to these positions may be made in increments of one to three years, contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
