MSS Solutions, LLC is seeking an experienced
** Start Up Technician
** to join our mechanical construction team in North and South Carolina. This role focuses on the field-based startup, pre‑commissioning, testing, and hand‑over of mechanical systems and equipment to the TAB contractor, 3rd‑party commissioning agent, and/or owner.
- Execute and document mechanical system and equipment startups, verifying proper installation, electrical wiring, functional tests, operation per design specs and manufacturer guidelines.
- Troubleshoot mechanical equipment, systems, and operations during commissioning and startup phases, diagnosing issues with VFDs, pumps, compressors, chillers, fans, hydronic loops, boilers, and cooling towers.
- Read, interpret, and work from mechanical drawings, P&IDs, wiring schematics, control sequences, installation/submittal documents, and manuals.
- Coordinate with MSS management, GC, and onsite trade partners to sequence startup activities, schedule resources, and ensure smooth hand‑over to 3rd‑party commissioning or TAB.
- Maintain startup documentation and checklists, and assist with owner training/turnover support to facility operations or maintenance staff.
- Ensure QC standards align with applicable codes, safety standards, manufacturer instructions, and MSS internal quality procedures.
- Travel from project to project and work in field/construction environments, including ladders, rooftops, crawl spaces, and heavy equipment.
- Perform pre‑functional checks on all equipment and complete all required documentation.
- Conduct general pre‑start activities such as removing shipping brackets, checking mounting of fans and isolators, and ensuring smooth operation.
- Develop and assist with hydraulic fill and flush plans, testing matrices, and ductwork and pipe testing.
- Perform QC checks for vents, drains, valves, support, accessibility, and control points.
- Troubleshoot, open/close, and check voltage of dampers and FSDs;
- Repair low‑voltage wiring and complete pump alignments.
- Pass MVR requirements to drive a company vehicle.
- Previous experience in residential or light commercial split‑level installation.
- Ability to evacuate and recharge HVAC systems.
- Successful background check and drug test required.
- Attending or completed HVAC technical training.
- Physical demands: occasional sitting, frequent stooping, crouching, kneeling, balancing, and climbing; constant standing, walking, reaching, and gripping; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. (maximum solo lift) and constant lifting 25 lbs.
Exposure to weather, extreme heat or cold, high noise levels, electrical shock, toxic or caustic chemicals, wet or humid conditions, vibration, proximity to moving mechanical parts, and working in high or hazardous places.
