Job Description
American Traveler seeks an experienced RN for a Pediatric Oncology/Hematology position requiring strong pediatric oncology and BMT skills with BLS, PALS, and APHON certification.
Responsibilities- Work in a 24-bed Pediatric Oncology/Hematology unit within a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma teaching hospital
- Care for hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplant patients, from neonates to adults who received childhood treatment
- Provide care for highly acute BMT patients, solid tumor cancers, leukemia, sickle cell, aplastic anemia, and pediatric behavioral health cases
- Patient ratios include 1:3 for Hem/Onc, 1:3-4 for Observation/Off Service, and 1:1-2 for BMT, based on acuity
- Expected to float to General Pediatric Medical units such as Ortho/Trauma, Gen Peds, Observation, and ED Holds (no floating to Main ER/PICU/NICU)
- 12-hour day shifts from 0700 to 1900 on a modified self-scheduling cycle with every other weekend rotation
- Travelers will be scheduled to work 75% of holidays
- Uses Epic EMR, Alaris IV pumps, and Omnicell medication dispensing
- No on-call or call back requirements; cameras and psych tech support available for behavioral health patients
- Responsible for highly acute pediatric oncology and BMT patients at various stages of treatment, including the sickest period post-transplant
- Department support includes free-floating charge RNs, unit educators, APPs, IV/VAT team, phlebotomy, RT, and 24/7 security
- Unit follows a positive pressure environment for BMT beds and implements frequent camera monitoring
- Behavioral health diagnoses and management are part of the unit's scope; psych techs are available
- Must wear navy blue scrubs
- Free parking is provided
- Strong teamwork and initiative are expected within the department
- First-time travelers with strong BMT experience will be considered
- RTO subject to manager approval
- Active NC or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and PALS certifications required
- APHON provider card required
- Minimum 2 years of pediatric nursing experience with strong oncology/hematology background
- Bone marrow transplant experience with Day 0-2 highly preferred
- Must have port access, chemotherapy administration, blood product transfusion, and cardiac rhythm interpretation experience
- Familiarity with central line care, PCA pumps, and heparin gtts required
- Experience with Epic charting preferred
- Permanent address must be at least 50 miles from assignment location
