Position OverviewA growing law firm is seeking an experienced Trust and Estates Attorney to join its private client practice. This role is ideal for an attorney with a strong background in estate planning and estate/trust administration who is comfortable managing client matters independently while collaborating with partners on complex planning strategies. The position offers direct client exposure, meaningful responsibility, and opportunities for professional growth within a sophisticated trusts and estates practice.
Key Responsibilities- Draft and review comprehensive estate planning documents, including wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, and special needs trusts.
- Advise individuals and families on estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax planning strategies.
- Handle all aspects of estate and trust administration, including asset marshaling and valuation, preparation of inventories, accountings, and fiduciary documentation, and distribution of assets.
- Work closely with fiduciaries, beneficiaries, accountants, and financial advisors to ensure efficient administration and compliance.
- Assist with preparation and review of estate, gift, and fiduciary income tax filings in coordination with tax professionals.
- Participate in client meetings and provide clear, practical legal guidance tailored to client needs.
- Manage multiple matters simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining attention to detail.
- Support senior attorneys on complex planning and administration matters as needed.
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in estate planning and trust/estate administration
- Active North Carolina Bar admission required
- South Carolina Bar admission strongly preferred
- If sitting primarily in South Carolina, SC Bar admission is required
- Strong drafting, analytical, and organizational skills
- Experience working directly with high-net-worth individuals and families preferred
- Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a collaborative team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
