Overview

The Service Now Solution Architect is the technical authority responsible for defining, governing, and safeguarding the long-term architectural integrity of a Service Now platform transformation. This role is accountable for making high-impact architectural decisions that directly influence the financial sustainability, operational resilience, and scalability of the Service Now ecosystem.

Unlike a development role focused on implementation, the Solution Architect determines what should be built, how it should be built, and whether it should be built  role is central to managing technical debt, leading greenfield versus refactor decisioning, and ensuring the platform evolves into a scalable, Service-Aware architecture aligned to enterprise standards and best practices.

Strategic Purpose

The Senior Service Now Solution Architect serves as the technical conscience of the engagement. This role prevents the propagation of legacy design flaws by enforcing disciplined architectural decision-making, ensuring adherence to Service Now platform constraints, and embedding governance through automation rather than manual controls.

The architect plays a critical role in implementing “Policy as Code” and establishing a Service Data Fabric, requiring deep expertise in Service Now platform architecture, Domain Separation implications, and Common Service Data Model (CSDM) dependencies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architectural Strategy & Platform Design:
Define and own the end-state Service Now architecture, including the design of a unified Service Data Fabric.

  • Standards & Governance:
Ensure strict adherence to Common Service Data Model (CSDM 5.0) standards across all domains and use cases.

  • Principles & Health:
Establish architectural principles that promote scalability, maintainability, and long-term platform health.

Technical Debt & Decision Engineering
  • Lead structured “Greenfield vs. Fixed” decisioning workshops to assess legacy customizations, integrations, and data models.

  • Evaluate existing implementations against Service Now out-of-box (OOB) capabilities to minimize future technical debt.

  • Render binding architectural decisions on refactor, retire, or rebuild strategies, balancing risk, cost, and long-term value.

Policy as Code Architecture
  • Design and implement a “Policy as Code” framework using the Service Now Policy as Code Engine (PaCE) and GRC/IRM modules.

  • Ensure governance, compliance, and operational controls are enforced programmatically across the platform.

  • Align policy automation with enterprise risk, security, and compliance requirements.

Integration Architecture
  • Architect secure, scalable, and high-performance integrations supporting asset visibility and event correlation.

  • Define integration standards and patterns, including REST and SOAP APIs, Integration Hub spokes, and event-driven architectures.

  • Ensure integration designs meet performance, security, and resiliency requirements.

Technical Governance & Quality Assurance
  • Chair the Technical Governance Board, reviewing and approving all proposed customizations and enhancements.

  • Enforce architectural standards and ensure alignment with the Service-Aware operating model.

  • Provide architectural guidance and oversight to development teams, preventing unnecessary customization and platform misuse.

Required Qualifications
  • Extensive experience as a Service Now Solution Architect on enterprise-scale implementations.

  • Deep knowledge of Service Now platform architecture, including ITSM, ITOM, CSDM, Domain Separation, and Integration Hub.

  • Proven expertise in managing technical debt and leading architectural decision-making for legacy platform transformations.

  • Strong understanding of Service Now governance, security, and compliance capabilities.

  • Ability to communicate complex architectural concepts to both technical and executive audiences.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and implementing Service Data Fabric or service-centric operating models.

  • Hands-on experience
