This full-time position is located 100% onsite at a hospital in Charlotte, NC, with a Monday–Friday schedule from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to connect uninsured hospital patients to programs that will cover their medical expenses. As a Patient Advocate, you will evaluate eligibility for various federal, state, and county medical or disability assistance programs through bedside visits and in-person interactions. Your primary objective is to guide patients face-to-face through the application process, ensuring thorough completion and follow-up.

This onsite, hospital-based role places you at the heart of patient financial advocacy, meeting individuals in their hospital rooms to guide them through eligibility and financial assistance applications. The goal is to ensure uninsured patients are promptly identified and assisted, with a benchmark that 98% of patients are screened  will serve as a liaison between the patient, the hospital facility, and government agencies, communicating proficiently in English and Spanish.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Screen uninsured hospital patients at bedside to determine eligibility for federal, state, and/or county medical or disability assistance.
  • Complete the appropriate applications and follow through until approved.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely documentation in MPower and hospital systems for all cases.
  • Provide exceptional customer service at all times.
  • Participate in ongoing trainings to apply new content in dealings with patients and cases.
  • Maintain assigned work queue of patient accounts.
  • Collaborate in person and via verbal/written correspondence with hospital staff, case managers, social workers, and financial counselors.
  • Answer incoming calls, make outbound calls, and track all necessary paperwork in MPower for enrollment and renewal for prospective Medicaid patients.
  • Maintain structured and timely contact with applicants and government agencies by phone whenever possible or as structured via the daily work queue.
  • Assist applicants with gathering additional reports or records, coordinating appointment dates and times, and arranging transportation if warranted.
  • Request home visits as needed to obtain documentation.
  • Inform clients in a timely manner of all approvals and denials of coverage per established protocols.
  • Attend ongoing required training to stay informed about current rules and regulations related to governmental programs and apply updated knowledge in practice.
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications And Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and abilities.

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred, except when required by our client.
  • Prior hospital experience preferred.
  • Adaptability when dealing with changing processes, computer systems, and government programs.
  • Professional experience working with state and federal programs.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to maneuver throughout the hospital and patients’ rooms during the scheduled shift.
  • Proficient experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis on Excel and Outlook.
  • Effective verbal and written communication in both English and Spanish.
  • Ability to multitask to meet performance metrics in a fast-paced environment.
  • Hospital-Based Patient Advocates are expected to dress in accordance with their client’s dress code.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, location, specialty, and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
