Job Summary

The CT Technologist I performs procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. Operates CT Scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency, including scanner, post-processing stations/programs, IV contrast injectors, O2 and suction equipment, patient transport, and patient monitoring equipment.

Major Responsibilities
  • Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient. Refers and questions orders to the Radiologist before performing exam. Contacts the ordering provider when there are discrepancies.
  • Properly identify patients (using two patient identifiers) and assist patients while offering a brief explanation of the procedures. Prepares patients for the procedure with a full explanation and documents on appropriate worksheets.
  • Interviews patients for a complete medical history. Reviews in-patients, ER, and outpatients EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history. Records medical history on requisitions. Correlates other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed.
  • Assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to end, including the completion of dictated results.
  • Prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols. Records contrast type and amount on request.
  • Evaluates the technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed. Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes additional, reconstructed images, and measurements as instructed.
  • Performs basic patient care functions. Informs appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition. Initiates life support measures when necessary. Assists in “code blue” procedures during emergencies.
  • Performs CT scanning and assists Radiologist/PA during invasive procedures. Practices sterile technique and adheres to infection control policies.
  • Obtains medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
  • Practices radiation safety principles for self, employees, patients, and family members. Follows safety standards.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment and maintains knowledge and skills to work safely in environments with potential exposure to blood borne pathogens and infectious diseases.
  • Adheres to fire and safety procedures. Attends in-service classes and safety modules.
  • Performs work accurately and timely, especially during emergencies. Rotates shifts including call back, holidays, and weekends. Punctuality and attendance are required.
  • Operates radiology computer systems, enters orders, charges procedures/supplies, and documents contrast administration.
  • Maintains a neat and stocked work area. Keeps all areas clean.
  • Assists other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, during exams or services involving CT scans.
Minimum

Job Requirements Education

Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency recognized by ARRT in Radiologic Technology.

Certification / License

ARRT certification in Radiology, or NMTCB for Nuclear Medicine, and advanced registry from ARRT in CT within one year of hire, plus current CPR certification.

Work Experience

Relevant experience preferred.
