Job SummaryThe MRI Technologist I performs procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. Operates MRI scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency, including the scanner, post processing stations/programs, IV contrast injectors, O2 and suction equipment, patient transport and patient monitoring equipment.
Essential Functions- Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient. Refers and questions orders to the Radiologist before performing exam. Contacts ordering provider when there are discrepancies.
- Properly identify patients and assist them while offering a brief explanation of the procedures. Prepares patients for the procedure with a full explanation and documents on appropriate worksheets.
- Interviews patients for a complete medical history. Reviews EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history. Records medical history on requisitions. Correlates other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed.
- Assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to end.
- Prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols. Records contrast type and amount upon request.
- Evaluates technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed. Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes additional images or measurements as instructed.
- Performs basic patient care functions and informs appropriate nursing personnel of changes in patient condition. Initiates life support measures when necessary and assists in code blue procedures during emergencies.
- Performs MRI scanning and assists physicians/physician assistants during invasive procedures. Maintains sterile technique as required and follows infection control policies.
- Obtains medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
- Practices radiation safety for self, staff, patients and others; follows radiation safety standards.
- Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisors and clinical engineering.
- Maintains knowledge of MRI safety requirements for staff and patients around magnetic fields.
- Adheres to fire and safety procedures, attends in-service classes and required safety modules.
- Operates radiology computer system, enters orders and documents contrast administration in the MAR.
- Maintains a clean and stocked work area and assists other medical personnel as needed.
- Supports other team members during exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan.
- Ensures compliance with biosafety and infection control practices.
Requires moderate to heavy physical effort in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies. Occasional standing, walking, and sitting. May require stretching, bending, twisting, squatting or kneeling. May be exposed to various physical conditions, including stairs and moving equipment. Must follow radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.
Education, Experience and CertificationsGraduate of an accredited two-year AMA-approved program in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology or active enrollment in an ARMRIT or ARRT registry-eligible program. ARRT certification in Radiologic Technology, ARRT or NMTCB for Nuclear Medicine with advanced registry from ARMRIT or ARRT in MRI required within one year of hire. CPR certification required. Current CPR certification required.
