Why This Role MattersThe Controller serves as a key contributor to LOVING’s financial strength and operational excellence. This role oversees and manages all accounting and financial functions for the organization, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information. The Controller is responsible for managing the accounting team, leading the monthly close process, producing financial reports, maintaining strong relationships with external partners, and ensuring optimal cash management.
The Controller will also ensure effective internal controls, processes, and compliance practices are in place to support a dynamic and growing landscaping business.
- Oversee the full-cycle accounting process, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions.
- Direct the monthly and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
- Prepare and analyze financial statements and reports, providing insights to senior leadership for strategic decision-making.
- Lead and manage the accounting staff, providing direction, training, and professional development.
- Support internal and external audit work by assisting in maintaining and preparing necessary support.
- Work with external tax accountants to ensure all federal, state, and local tax filings are prepared and filed accurately and on time. Remain informed of applicable tax laws and updates.
- Develop, implement, and enforce internal controls and accounting processes that will scale with company growth.
- Set up and refine accounting systems and procedures to improve efficiency and reporting.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and improve cash flow performance by monitoring receivables and payables, assisting with collections, and forecasting cash needs for upcoming projects or expenditures.
- Partner with operations leadership to develop process improvements that drive profitability and efficiency.
- Support the budgeting and forecasting efforts by compiling financial data, analyzing spend trends, and identifying areas for cost savings and revenue improvement.
- Oversee and optimize the company’s use of Quick Books, ensuring accurate and efficient reporting.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned that support the mission and core values of LOVING, ensuring alignment with our culture of community, integrity, and impact.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (CPA strongly preferred).
- 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Proven experience leading the finance and accounting function for a company, including establishing new processes and internal controls.
- Highly Proficient with Quick Books Desktop and Excel. Proficient with Microsoft package.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and explain complex financial concepts to non-finance colleagues.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Track record of building and developing accounting staff.
- Construction, landscaping or commercial homebuilding industry experience highly desirable.
Experience with a financial system upgrade/conversion a bonus.
