SUMMARY

This college summer internship position will work directly in Engineering Services and Facilities Construction, the divisions responsible for horizontal (transportation) and vertical (facilities) construction. Interns will gain valuable exposure to real-world projects, allowing them to expand their skills while learning about the department's operations and processes. This internship serves as a strong foundation for students, equipping them with the tools to excel in future engineering roles.

Many former interns have returned to the city as full-time employees. $20/hour.

ENGINEERING SERVICES

* Gain insights into the planning, design, and construction of municipal transportation projects from experienced staff.

* Experience the day-to-day operations of both the In-House Design and Consultant Project Management programs.

* Get involved with high-profile city projects

* Opportunity to shadow staff throughout various stages of project management, gaining firsthand knowledge of the process.

* Learn the full scope of managing a transportation project, including planning, design, real estate, utility relocation, bidding, and construction. Participate in key milestones and understand the city's processes.

* Contribute by preparing technical reports and presentations, while gaining exposure to engineering software like Civil 3D (AutoCAD) and more.

* Build valuable project management and design skills that will be crucial for your future career in engineering.

FACILITIES CONSTRUCTION

* Opportunity to shadow and assist Project Managers who oversee capital improvement projects, new and renovation, for the Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Solid Waste Services, Office of Sustainability, and other client groups.

* Exposure to the various stages of a project such as planning, design development, procurement of consultants and contractors, and construction.

* Interact with project stakeholders and support divisions.

* Review project budget and schedule information

* Assist with development of Department/Division processes

* Review monthly pay applications.

* Audit division performance and project costs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Current enrollment in an accredited college or university leading towards a bachelor's degree in engineering with major course work in a related field (such as Construction Management, Architecture, etc.) of study specific to the departmental and/or work assignment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City's Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate's written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
