OEM SHE Officer

The OEM SHE Officer coordinates health, safety and environmental matters, ensuring legal compliance, inspections, risk mitigation and a positive safety culture within OEM operations.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular risk assessments to identify hazards related to OEM operations.
  • Develop and monitor corrective action plans to address identified hazards.
  • Compliance & Policy Contribution
  • Provide input into drafting, updating, and reviewing SHE policies and procedures relevant to OEM contexts.
  • Ensure OEM operations adhere to local legislation (e.g., South Africa’s OHSA, MHSA, COP’s, SANS/SABS). Comply with client SHE specifications, ISO standards, and internal SHE standards through scheduled inspections and audits.
  • Inspections, Audits & Monitoring
  • Perform site inspections and internal SHE audits, compiling comprehensive written reports.
  • Track implementation of recommendations and follow up on non-conformities.
  • Conduct safety file compliance audits and advise on required actions to maintain the required standard on all site file audits.
  • Serve as an initial responder to OEM-related incidents, ensuring prompt investigation and documentation.
  • Lead root-cause analyses and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Training & Emergency Readiness
  • Organise and deliver training sessions, toolbox talks, and safety inductions tailored to OEM staff.
  • Assist in creating emergency response plans and facilitate incident response drills.
  • SHE Reporting & Documentation
  • Maintain SHE records (risk registers, incident logs, inspection checklists).
  • Generate regular performance reports, trend analyses, and compliance stats.
  • Drive SHEQ Department Key Performance Areas within the OEM Department.
  • Monitor and Measure OEM SHEQ KPI deliverables.
  • Prepare safety performance reports and present to Management.
  • OEM team SHE onboarding in alignment with client specifications.
  • Collaborate with OEM production staff, engineering, and management to integrate safety measures from design through production stages.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education:

    Diploma or bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, Environmental Science, or relevant technical discipline.
  • Certifications:

    SAMTRAC, COMSOC, NEBOSH, or South African OHSA-equivalent certification preferred.
  • Professional Registration: SACPCMP registered CHSO a must.
  • Experience:

    3–5 years in SHE roles, ideally within OEM or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong familiarity with local SHE legislation and OEM operational standards.
  • Excellent analytical skills to conduct thorough investigations and risk evaluations.
  • Effective communication and training delivery for cross‑functional teams.
  • High attention to detail for conducting inspections and preparing accurate reports.
  • Ability to coordinate with external SHE bodies or auditors.

  • Proactive reduction of OEM‑related incidents and accidents.
  • Timely completion and follow‑up of inspections and corrective actions.
  • Evidence of improved OEM safety performance via KPI tracking.
  • Positive feedback from SHE audits and enhanced employee safety engagement.
