Overview

WSP is initiating a search for a Bridge Design Engineer. This position will sit out of our Charlotte, NC office. Work on high-profile, complex bridge and structure design projects that shape the region’s infrastructure. Tasks may include basic assistance with design, concept development, and plan production of load-bearing structures, specifically bridges. Generate accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project.

Ensure responsibilities are delivered with a quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality.

Your Impact

Duties

  • Perform engineering analysis and design of transportation structures such as bridges and retaining walls under close supervision; work is reviewed for adequacy and accuracy.
  • Assist with evaluating, developing, designing or selecting required structures.
  • Perform analysis and design calculations for structures using programs such as LEAP Bridge, Midas, etc.
  • Calculate quantities for structures.
  • Use Micro Station and Open Bridge to perform engineering tasks, including 3D modeling of bridges/structures and developing structural design plans in CADD.
  • Review fabricator/contractor working drawings.
  • Research applicable design codes and guidelines to ensure design compliance.
  • Coordinate assignments with the project team and supervisor.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including data collection, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills when interacting with others and presenting ideas to engineering and non-engineering audiences
  • Familiarity with design/build processes and concepts
  • Familiarity with relevant structural design codes; familiarity with AASHTO Bridge codes preferred
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, with multi-tasking and prioritization skills in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office software, spreadsheets, and tools
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (e.g., Micro Station, Geopak, Open Bridge, AASHTOWare BrR)
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies
  • Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek for project needs
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer in Training Certification
  • Active involvement in local professional practice organizations
  • Master's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering with emphasis in structures
