Position: Lead Piping Stress Engineer 1 - Nuclear

Overview

Description and responsibilities for the Piping Engineering & Analysis discipline. The discipline performs evaluations for piping systems in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.7, and other codes as applicable to the specific evaluation. It also covers specialty topics including vibration monitoring and analysis, evaluation of hydraulic transients, thermal stratification effects, operability evaluations, qualification of piping for hydrodynamic loads, pipe rupture evaluations, and evaluation of wall thinning due to flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) or microbiological induced corrosion (MIC).

Responsibilities
  • Provide senior level technical direction and supervision to the project team members in the Piping Engineering & Analysis discipline. Establish project task schedules and budgets for the discipline to meet overall project requirements. Coordinate activities between disciplines. Serve as a technical liaison with the client and a lead technical resource on projects.

  • Lead engineers support engineering design projects with the following responsibilities:

    • Review complex calculations and approve simple calculations. Provide technical guidance to project team members. Ensure calculations are technically sound and in accordance with project requirements.

  • Review and approve simple system/structural designs and prepare/review complex system/structural designs to ensure completeness, accuracy, quality, constructability, and operability.

  • Perform engineering review of drawings. Review design input for complex systems/structures. Define client expectations for drawings. Coordinate interface between design and engineering. Actively participate in design reviews to ensure quality, constructability, and operability.

  • Prepare and review major system, installation, and material specifications. Define technical and commercial requirements, including scheduling of vendor submittals needed for design input.

  • Prepare bid evaluations for complex systems and installation scopes. Participate in bid negotiations with vendors. May evaluate change orders on behalf of the client.

  • Prepare and review single-discipline, complex reports/studies. Participate in the preparation of multi-discipline reports. Review studies and reports to ensure conclusions are technically sound, cost-effective, and clearly communicated.

  • This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in-office work 3 days per week.

Qualifications

Required

Skills and Experience:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace, or Structural/Civil Engineering, from an ABET-accredited program, with emphasis in solid mechanics, structural analysis, theory of elasticity, metallurgy, and finite element analysis.

  • P.E. license

  • 10 or more years of relevant experience

  • Extensive knowledge of ASME B31.1 and ASME B&PV Section III piping codes

  • Knowledge of design, selection, and application of pipe supporting elements

  • Working knowledge of commercially available piping products and their application

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Valued but Not Required

Skills and Experience:

  • The ability to navigate a 3D CAD model

  • Experience with AutoPIPE or PIPESTRESS software

  • Knowledge of gas dynamics and hydraulic transients

  • Knowledge of pipe condition assessment

  • Experience with ANSYS Workbench and Mechanical ADP
